Assurance in taking your IFRS 17 Implementation Beyond Compliance with Advanced Analytics and Enterprise Risk Management.

Given the investments required for IFRS 17 and the impacts to the business, many insurers have their sights set on a target outcome well beyond standard compliance. Insurers are automating processes, advancing analytics, and venturing into the World of AI. The focus of the session will be to walk through an illustrative example of IFRS 17 and showcase how insurers are leveraging the rich dataset to automate processes, advance analytics, and capitalize on AI.

With the significant level of change impacting systems, processes ,and people resulting from IFRS 17, Insurers are looking for risk management in a new system/program implementation, including conducting effective front-end risk assessment, designing effective systems controls, maximizing configurable controls, implementing sustainable compliance processes, enhancing risk management capabilities, optimizing control environment (automated versus manual controls), evaluating and designing effective segregation of duty frameworks and mitigating controls. BDO will show how risk management and internal controls affect all aspects of an implementation and will outline what you should be looking for in robust risk management for your IFRS 17 implementation.

Alex is the practice-lead for Data & Analytics at BDO Canada LLP IT Solutions practice. Having worked across all lines of insurance of Health, Property & Casualty, and Life, Alex has deep industry and technical knowledge providing Analytics solutions to meet the needs of the Digital Insurer.

Alex is a technically proficient, customer-dedicated delivery manager with 20+ years of experience and cross-functional ability in the design and architecture, programming and testing of large-scale, highly complex solutions, with emphasis on Data, Cloud, and Web technologies. Alex is skilled in redesigning processes to strengthen development cycle while introducing strategies that generate product/process improvements

    Marvin Yorke
IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts - Subject Matter Expert, BDO Canada

Marvin has over 15 years of experience serving clients in the Insurance and Asset Management sectors in North America, Europe and the Caribbean. He has assisted many clients navigate the complexities of IFRS 17 through providing training, performing financial and operational impact assessments, and preparing position papers. Marvin is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants Association of Ontario and a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in the UK.

Marvin approaches his work with a practical mindset recognizing that every company has its unique set of operational circumstances. Recognizing the fact that the impact of IFRS 17 extends far beyond finance and accounting, Marvin has worked very close with professionals in Actuarial and IT over the years to the ensure that the collective IFRS 17 impact, risks, opportunities and options are clearly understood and articulated to clients.

    James Knott
Manager, Technology Risk Management, BDO Canada

James is a Manager in Technology Risk Management (TRS) practice within BDO Canada. James has over 30 years of IT risk and audit experience from an IT internal/external audit and risk management perspective. He has extensive consulting and audit experience covering, IT system implementations, Sarbanes-Oxley programs, IT security and Service Auditor reports (i.e. SOC1, SOC2, ISAE3402, etc.) engagements throughout a number of industries including financial services, manufacturing, Insurance and SaaS service providers.
      Eshan Gaffar, CPA, CGA, MBA
Senior IFRS17 Implementation Consultant, Moody's Analytics

Eshan is a Senior IFRS 17 Implementation Consultant with Moody’s Analytics based in Toronto. He works closely with Clients and Partners in North America and provides guidance in the roll out of the RiskIntegrity IFRS 17 solution and Sub-Ledger functionality that caters for IFRS 17 calculations, accounting transactions and disclosure requirements. With a career spanning over 20 years in the financial services sector prior to joining Moody’s, Eshan occupied several positions in multinational organizations, leading multiple business transformation projects, managing cross-functional teams and contributing in strategic initiatives.

Aside from his CPA, CGA and MBA designations, Eshan is a Fellow member of the ACCA (UK) and is a certified Harvard ManageMentor (HMM). Eshan is bilingual in English and French and has a diverse international exposure, mainly across Africa.

      Anton Kobelev
Senior IFRS17 Implementation Engineer, Moody's Analytics

Anton is a Senior IFRS 17 Implementation Engineer with Moody’s Analytics, based out of their Toronto office. Anton is responsible for implementation guidance for existing IFRS 17 clients, support of the members of the Partner Alliance and pre-sales activities for RiskIntegrity IFRS 17. He has over 13 years of experience in the corporate finance and insurance industries, lately focusing on life insurance regulatory solutions. Anton’s work prior to joining Moody’s Analytics includes working for a direct life insurance company in Europe, for one of the Big 4 member firms in the United States in audit and consulting and for a retrocession company in Toronto. Anton is an ASA and a CERA and received his Bachelor’s education at University of Toronto.

      Srini Iyer
Senior Director, Risk and Accounting Solutions, Moody's Analytics

Srini is a Senior Director responsible for providing subject matter expertise across solutions, products and services offered by Moody’s Analytics. He has over fifteen years of experience in the insurance and banking industry – including experience with Life, P&C and asset management. Srini has spent the last several years helping clients meet their accounting and regulatory requirements around IFRS 17, IFRS 9 and CECL. Srini holds an MBA in Finance from the NYU Stern School of Business and a Masters in Computer Science from New Jersey Institute of Technology.
